Kucinich:
New Study Shows
1.2 Million Iraqi Civilians Died In War; Resolution Will Ask House To
Investigate, Prefer Criminal Charges If Necessary
Go to Original
Washington, Sep
19 - A British
polling agency has determined that more than one million Iraqi citizens
have died as a result of the Iraq war. This report follows survey
results released last fall by Lancet, the prestigious medical magazine
which gave a conservative estimate of 650,000 deaths. Opinion Research
Business found that the death rate in Iraq increased by 1.2 million
people since the U.S.-led invasion began in 2003.
“When you
consider that
this war was based on lies, when you consider that Iraq did not attack
the United States, that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, and that Iraq
did not have weapons of mass destruction, it is an urgent matter of
national morality to determine what the appropriate response
is,”
said Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH).
“It is
time for us to
start talking about the legal responsibility of President Bush, Vice
President Cheney and all the other war architects who built a case for
the war based on lies.
“The very
essence of
America’s credibility in the world is at stake. Our highest
elected officials should be held accountable for actions that resulted
in the deaths of more than a million innocent people, particularly when
those deaths were based on demonstrable lies.
“It is
very important that
we start to ask serious questions about accountability. Just as no
individual has the right to take another individual’s life,
no
nation has the right to kill innocent people in another nation. No
leader of the United States--in the name of the United States--should
be permitted to wage aggressive war with impunity.
“I am
preparing a
resolution that requests the House meet in the Committee of the Whole
to investigate the matter of civilian causalities as well as U.S. troop
casualties that have occurred in Iraq. The resolution will recount that
the war was based on lies. It will ask the House to consider
action, including possibly preferring criminal charges against
individuals who in the Administrative conduct of office were directly
responsible for the war and the consequent loss of life.
“A grave
injustice has
been done to the people of Iraq and the people of the United States.
More than one million lives have been lost. Families have been
destroyed. Social networks have been ripped apart. We have had many
soldiers killed and injured. This must be acknowledged.
“On a
deeper level, the
inquiry I am proposing relates to who we are as Americans and what we
stand for. I refuse to believe that the American
people—people of
intelligence and good heart will not want to see justice done. There
must be a measure of justice brought forward so that this deep stain on
American history is removed,” Kucinich concluded.
“We
must seek the truth, wherever it leads.”

Guantanamo Now! End the Illegal War and Bring the Troops Home Now!
Restore the Constitution!
Republican Senators
Jon Kyl and
Jeff Sessions, among others speaking on the floor of the Senate
yesterday,
made an eloquent appeal on the need to be able to detain people until
the end of a given conflict. However, I believe they have missed an
important point of the bill's author, and they have missed the point on
the will of the majority of the people in this country,
that We the People want the war over now! Not next year.
We want impeachment of Cheney and Bush now!
Debating over the issue of whether or not to prosecute an accused war
criminal is not an option!
There is a another fundamental issue here that I feel the need to bring
up.
We cannot continue as a species to solve our problems with violence.
Violence is wrong, pure and simple, and it only creates more violence.
And our country is on a path of ever-expanding violence and
militarization.
We have over 700 bases in over 140 countries, and our intention is to
leave a dozen bases in and around Iraq.Peace will never be achieved at
the end of a sword. Long term peace for the world can only be achieved
through mutual demilitarization, cooperation, and respect.
The War on Terror was predicated on lies. Many of the so-called
"terrorists" are merely people defending their own country. You would
defend your country if it was invaded and occupied by foreign
militaries, and you know you would. Damn right, I would too. The few
people that really are committing acts of terror, probably would not do
so if the industrialized nations of the Earth stopped treating the rest
of the world as their personal resource storehouse and dumping ground.
Either way, regardless of who committs the violence, it is wrong.
Period.
And since this particular war is based and run on lies, we can assume
that many, if
not most, of the detainees do not belong in detention at all. Guantanamo
must be closed and the land must be returned to the Cuban government ,
who are the rightful owners. This would go a long way toward the whole
mutual respect thing.

Recent
statement by longtime
political activist, Curtis Muhammed, illustrates the need for all
peace, labor, and social justice organizations to begin working
together on common ground issues.
Speaking
on a recent episode of Democracy Now,
longtime political activist Curtis Muhammed stated that he is leaving
the movement, leaving the country, and moving "down south",
because he
says "there is no movement." Mr. Muhammed seems to be, in my opinion,
having the same frustrations that are currently frustrating many
activists, including myself.
Specifically, Mr. Muhammed was comparing the dynamics of the civil
rights "movement" from his early activist days, to the modern
"movement" that is working the issues surrounding New Orleans and the
aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. My understanding of his observation and
experience is that
when outside organizations respond to appeals for help, they have a
tendency to come to the
table with their own agendas, trivializing the needs of the people at
the center of the situation, resulting in people's needs not being met,
and resulting in a loss of potential for a people's movement to bring
about real change.
This dynamic is also present in the larger national movements. What I
am referring to, and what I think Mr. Muhammed might agree with
upon consideration, is the tendency of the many progressive
organizations to focus only
on their organizations issues, resulting in small, narrowly focused
victories.
Whereas, the potential that is inherent in a broad spectrum
alliance of diverse organizations that have collectively refocused
even a portion of their energies on common ground, fundamental issues
can
cause significant shifts in the basic nature of society and
government, when those energies are focused on core issues. And in critical times, such as
these, the need for unity across all fronts becomes apparent.
What I mean is, if you take a couple of steps back and really analyze
the root cause of many of societies problems, you might realize that
there are common threads interwoven into all of our seemingly separate
issues. The wealthy elite are playing a game of class warfare, and
nearly all the other issues such as race, gender, religion, political
affiliation, etc. are actually pieces on the board, used strategically
by the power elite to play the game. It is to their strategic advantage
to keep us, the people, disparate and unorganized.
For example, the crisis that is happening in New Orleans with the
people having their homes taken and destroyed, is really an ethnic and
class "cleansing"that the government and their corporate sponsors are
carrying out against the people of New Orleans, so that the region can
be turned over to wealthy interests. Most people realize this.
Now take what might be considered an unrelated cause, and that is
stopping "mountain top removal" by mining companies in the
Appalachians.
These corporations strip mine an area by blowing up and removing entire
mountain tops, depositing all the debris into the surrounding valleys
and streams. The end result is near-total environmental destruction.
The people who make their lives in these surrounding communities, can
no longer do so , and so they are forced to leave. And to top it all
off, pun intended, the Bush Administration has made a recent rule
change that will allow this destructive process to accelerate.
This goes right along with the continued assault on native culture and
the land by allowing mining and other corporate interests to conduct
destructive operations, including hazardous waste disposal, on native
lands. The truth is, the Indian Wars have never ended. The government's
policy regarding native people's is to break their spirit, force their
assimilation, and exterminate the remainder. And because of the imposed
reservation system, they can do it out from under the watchful eye of a
public that would not knowingly approve, if they knew all the facts.
Or consider the situation with unions in this country. The government
and their corporate cronies would like very much to have the unions
either go away or come under their complete control. Wealthy
capitalists depend on cheap labor to become wealthy capitalists. We are
part of the equation.
And of course, there is the war. Never has a particular crisis so
clearly indicated who it's beneficiaries are.
The common threads here are the accumulation and consolidation of
wealth and
power, and the government corruption that allow such atrocious
accumulations to occur. Corporate power and government corruption, that
spills out into nearly every issue.
The reality, which is widely recognized as being such, is that our
society is still fighting the oldest battle that common peoples have
fought since the early days of civilization. It is the class war, the
often silent war of the "haves" against the "have nots". The "haves"
participate in the institutionalized subjugation of people. Government
is occupied by the wealthy class, because they are the only ones who
can afford the cost of campaigning. they create laws and place
boundaries upon the land. They assume control of resources, both human
and material, often by force. Every new social innovation that might
help common people, is co-opted by the system, and assigned a price
that keeps it from those who provide the labor, and who might actually
benefit from truthful implementation of enlightened public policy.
The fundamental issues of the very real class war could be
most
effectively addressed by a series of Amendments to the Constitution.
Amendments created by we the people in convention, that address the
root of the problem head on. Organizing for, and holding a Second Constitutional Convention can
help bring about the desperate change we have all been fighting for.
28th
Amendment
- proposed by Dr. Robert Bowman to remove the Rights of Persons from
corporations. This would correct a major flaw in current public policy
that places the interests of corporations at the same theoretical level
as the people. Beacause of the massive resources available to
corporations, aquired through the principles of class warfare, allowing
corporations to retain the rights of physical people gives the
principle shareholders of the corporations, the wealthy class, total
control over policy and governance of the rest of society.
29th
Amendment
- proposed by WTPNet.org as mechanism for the people to enforce the
Sworn Oath of Office. The Oath of Office is not supposed to be
symbolic. The Oath is literal, why else do we require government
officials to swear to it? Supreme Court Chief Justice Marshall
confirmed this fact in the 1803 decision of Marbury v Madison.
30th
Amendment
- to repeal all laws relating to the criminalization of Marijuana, in
all its forms. The demonization of this most useful plant, Cannabis
Sativa, has lead to many of our economic and environmental problems.
Decriminalization would allow this plant to be fully utilized
for medicine, food, fuel, building materials, and at least a
thousand other uses. It would create entire new industries and new jobs
to go with them. We could have a realistic chance at fighting global
warming.
31st Amendment
- proposed by WTPNet.org in order to level the playing field when it
comes to political campaigns, elections and lobbying. The idea is to
remove the money aspect completely from political campaigning and
lobbying. Every candidate would have equal air time on the various
public media, like television, radio, and print media. This time and/or
space would be provided free to all candidates and for all elections,
as a public service from the various networks, stations, and
publications. In addition, no money contributions of any kind would be
allowed to politicians or organizations campaigning for politicians.
If we the people can successfully rally others
to the cause of the Second Constitutional Convention, not by abandoning
our present struggles, hell no, too many people depend on this day to
day activism. Instead, we need to push even further than we have
previously done, and take on the task of organizing for
something
that may finally give us the relief we so urgently seek, the Second
Constitutional Convention.
Please take part in the debate.
Please take part in the Global Community Forum.
Peace,
Paul Fisher

"Executive
Order:

of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts
in Iraq
Office
of the Press
Secretary
Tuesday
17 July 2007
Fact
sheet:
Message
to the
Congress of the United States Regarding International
Emergency Economic Powers Act.
go to original
By the authority
vested in me as President by the Constitution and the
laws of the United States of America, including the International
Emergency Economic Powers Act, as amended (50 U.S.C. 1701 et
seq.)(IEEPA), the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1601 et
seq.)(NEA), and section 301 of title 3, United States Code, I, GEORGE
W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, find that, due to
the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and
foreign policy of the United States posed by acts of violence
threatening the peace and stability of Iraq and undermining efforts to
promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq and to
provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people, it is in the
interests of the United States to take additional steps with respect to
the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13303 of May 22,
2003, and expanded in Executive Order 13315 of August 28, 2003, and
relied upon for additional steps taken in Executive Order 13350 of July
29, 2004, and Executive Order 13364 of November 29, 2004. I hereby
order:
Section 1. (a)
Except to the extent provided in section 203(b)(1), (3),
and (4) of IEEPA (50 U.S.C. 1702(b)(1), (3), and (4)), or in
regulations, orders, directives, or licenses that may be issued
pursuant to this order, and notwithstanding any contract entered into
or any license or permit granted prior to the date of this order, all
property and interests in property of the following persons, that are
in the United States, that hereafter come within the United States, or
that are or hereafter come within the possession or control of United
States persons, are blocked and may not be transferred, paid, exported,
withdrawn, or otherwise dealt in: any person determined by the
Secretary of the Treasury, in consultation with the Secretary of State
and the Secretary of Defense,
(i) to have
committed, or to pose a significant risk of committing, an
act or acts of violence that have the purpose or effect of:
(A) threatening the
peace or stability of Iraq or the Government of
Iraq; or
(B) undermining
efforts to promote economic reconstruction and
political reform in Iraq or to provide humanitarian assistance to the
Iraqi people;
(ii) to have
materially assisted, sponsored, or provided financial,
material, logistical, or technical support for, or goods or services in
support of, such an act or acts of violence or any person whose
property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order;
or
(iii) to be owned
or controlled by, or to have acted or purported to
act for or on behalf of, directly or indirectly, any person whose
property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order.
(b) The
prohibitions in subsection (a) of this section include, but are
not limited to, (i) the making of any contribution or provision of
funds, goods, or services by, to, or for the benefit of any person
whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this
order, and (ii) the receipt of any contribution or provision of funds,
goods, or services from any such person.
Sec. 2. (a) Any
transaction by a United States person or within the
United States that evades or avoids, has the purpose of evading or
avoiding, or attempts to violate any of the prohibitions set forth in
this order is prohibited.
(b) Any conspiracy
formed to violate any of the prohibitions set forth
in this order is prohibited.
Sec. 3. For
purposes of this order:
(a) the term
"person" means an individual or entity;
(b) the term
"entity" means a partnership, association, trust, joint
venture, corporation, group, subgroup, or other organization; and
(c) the term
"United States person" means any United States citizen,
permanent resident alien, entity organized under the laws of the United
States or any jurisdiction within the United States (including foreign
branches), or any person in the United States.
Sec. 4. I hereby
determine that the making of donations of the type
specified in section 203(b)(2) of IEEPA (50 U.S.C. 1702(b)(2)) by, to,
or for the benefit of, any person whose property and interests in
property are blocked pursuant to this order would seriously impair my
ability to deal with the national emergency declared in Executive Order
13303 and expanded in Executive Order 13315, and I hereby prohibit such
donations as provided by section 1 of this order.
Sec. 5. For those
persons whose property and interests in property are
blocked pursuant to this order who might have a constitutional presence
in the United States, I find that, because of the ability to transfer
funds or other assets instantaneously, prior notice to such persons of
measures to be taken pursuant to this order would render these measures
ineffectual. I therefore determine that for these measures to be
effective in addressing the national emergency declared in Executive
Order 13303 and expanded in Executive Order 13315, there need be no
prior notice of a listing or determination made pursuant to section
1(a) of this order.
Sec. 6. The
Secretary of the Treasury, in consultation with the
Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense, is hereby authorized
to take such actions, including the promulgation of rules and
regulations, and to employ all powers granted to the President by IEEPA
as may be necessary to carry out the purposes of this order. The
Secretary of the Treasury may redelegate any of these functions to
other officers and agencies of the United States Government, consistent
with applicable law. All agencies of the United States Government are
hereby directed to take all appropriate measures within their authority
to carry out the provisions of this order and, where appropriate, to
advise the Secretary of the Treasury in a timely manner of the measures
taken.
Sec. 7. Nothing in
this order is intended to affect the continued
effectiveness of any rules, regulations, orders, licenses, or other
forms of administrative action issued, taken, or continued in effect
heretofore or hereafter under 31 C.F.R. chapter V, except as expressly
terminated, modified, or suspended by or pursuant to this order.
Sec. 8. This order
is not intended to, and does not, create any right,
benefit, or privilege, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or
in equity by any party against the United States, its departments,
agencies, instrumentalities, or entities, its officers or employees, or
any other person.

Innocent man Gary Tyler sits on Louisiana's Death Row.
If you haven't
already, watch or listen to this episode of Democracy Now.
A man named Gary
Tyler sits in Angola State Prison for a crime that most
people know he did not commit. He has been in prison now for thirty-two
years, since he was sixteen years old. This man is innocent; the
officials in Louisiana know that he is innocent, yet he remains in
prison.
I have written the following letter and sent it to the Louisiana
Governor, Kathleen Blanco, via the Free Gary Tyler website. Please feel
free to copy my letter and send it to the Louisiana Governor's office.
I
am also going to send one snail mail, because I think the letter was
actually too large for the Governor's official contact form and may not
have successfully sent.
The entire letter is here.
